SLC is tackling single-use containers – one cup at a time! SLC has adopted a new reusable food packaging program called Cano. This exciting initiative has enabled the College community to participate in reducing the waste we produce as an institution and reducing the impact of food packaging production and pollution overall.
Research shows that food packaging waste comprises approximately one-third of all Canadian household waste, and only 20% is recovered for reuse and recycling. Food packaging ends up in our natural environment and in our waterways, breaks down to emit greenhouse gases, and infiltrates our water through leeching and microplastics.
The good news is that YOU can help reduce this impact by participating in the Cano program. By joining in, users will collect points to earn free drinks and meals and help to tackle pollution and climate change.
Through this app-driven program, participants can borrow a Cano coffee cup or food container (available in three sizes) when purchasing food or drinks on campus and return the items at one of our centrally located receptacles.
Easy Like 1-2-3
- Download the free Cano app
- Scan the QR code on the Cano container at an SLC cafeteria
- Scan the QR code at the cashier to complete the borrowing process
You can keep your Cano containers for 14 days. Return your Cano containers in less than 48 hours to get points and redeem rewards!
