Often one to two pages in length, a resume is an informational document that lists and summarizes your qualifications such as skills and education. Most resumes include the following primary sections:

  1. Contact Information
  2. Summary
  3. Education
  4. Employment History

There are two common resume format types; chronological and functional. A chronological resume is most effective in highlighting your related work experience, while a functional resume is most effective in highlighting your related skills.

The purpose of the cover letter is to introduce your resume and express your interest in working for the prospective employer. Your letter should be one page in length and written in standard business form.

The purpose of an interview is to demonstrate what you could do for the company. It provides you with an opportunity to assess whether your qualifications and career goals align with the position and company objectives.

“Successful job seekers must have both good information and well-developed job-hunting skills. Three important factors for a successful job search are an awareness of your skills and goals, an understanding of the labour market and a well-planned job search campaign."

Here are some resources to help you conduct an effective job search:

The Labour Market can be broadly defined as the market in which workers compete for jobs and employers compete for workers.

In the labour market, labour services are exchanged and those negotiations occurring between buyers and sellers partly determine the placement of workers in jobs with specified wages.

Labour Market Information (LMI) can be broadly defined as the information needed by individuals and organizations to make informed decisions about the labour market.

Labour Market Information addresses questions concerning the following:

  • Unemployment rates
  • Economic trends
  • Demographics
  • Wage rates

Information on the Canadian and Ontario labour markets help individuals and businesses make informed decisions about education and training, careers, business plans and employment. Insights into labour market trends and conditions in Ontario and Canada can be found through labour market research.

Websites are a great resource to use when performing labour market research:

Career Services offers a variety of job fairs, workshops, career information sessions throughout the year to create opportunities to develop your skills and build your professional network so you are career-ready upon graduation.
