Kingston campus students received an email with information from KFL&A Public Health on Invasive Meningococcal Disease (IMD) and specifically meningococcal B (MenB). Anyone interested in more information about these infections can visit kflaph.ca/IMD for details.
To ensure consistent information and support for our students, we are informing employees of the information being shared and awareness being raised with the student population, as post-secondary students living on-campus are at increased risk of meningococcal infection. IMD is spread through saliva, like that exchanged via the sharing of drinks, utensils, and cigarettes or vapes. People are not exposed to the bacteria through casual contact or by breathing air where someone with IMD has been.
To help connect students with vaccines and more information vaccination clinics have been arranged for students in Kingston. The SLC Kingston Campus Health Centre is offering a two-dose vaccine clinic to students on March 7, with follow up April 4. Students can book an appointment via the online portal or by calling 613-544-5400 ext. 5521. SLC is offering free full vaccination to the first 85 students booked. Domestic students can receive 80% reimbursement through the student health insurance plan.
Any employees with concerns are encouraged to contact their family doctor or a local health care provider, who can provide information and a vaccine prescription. Note in speaking with your care provider, that prescription treatment with the Trumenba vaccine is covered under the SLC employee benefits plan. Over the counter immunization options are not covered by the employee benefits plan, however a pharmacist can administer the vaccine if one is already prescribed to you.
