Meet the tri-campus Student Rights & Responsibilities Office (SRRO) team of Anya Brooker and Katie Sills (pictured above, left to right) and learn how they help students navigate their academic and non-academic college experience.
Q: What brought you to St. Lawrence College?
Anya Brooker: I have been working in post-secondary environments for about seven years. I came to SLC in 2018 when I moved back to this area. I had always heard great things about working at SLC... and now I know the rumours are true! I am currently the Manager, Student Rights & Responsibilities.
Katie Sills: I am originally from Prince Edward County and in 2018 I graduated from the Social Service Worker (fast-track) program at SLC. Following this, I moved to North Bay and worked in the post-secondary environments there. This past spring, I decided to move back to the area and ended up back at SLC, this time as an employee! I started in July as the Student Rights & Responsibilities Officer.
Q: What’s new with the Student Rights and Responsibilities Office (SRRO) at SLC?
Anya: We have grown! This year we welcomed Katie as an additional member of the team. We have made some great process improvements too: we now have a Conduct Report form that can be used to bring any student conduct issues to our attention. We’ve added helpful resources to our webpage, like Sexual Violence prevention videos, resources related to online conduct and more. Check it out here: www.stlawrencecollege.ca/SRRO
Katie: We have also been busy updating our print resources. We have a new handbill which provides an overview of our office, and a new Responding to Disclosures of Sexual Violence handout. If you would like some for your office, please reach out – we would be happy to provide some! I am also looking to meet with faculty and staff, so I can even drop off directly to you in your office.
Q: How does the SRRO support SLC’s value of Students First?
Anya: Our office is focused on helping create a safe, supportive, respectful college environment. We are here to help students problem-solve, self-advocate, and learn about their rights and expectations while they are a student at SLC.
Katie: We also take a students first approach by following the lead of the student. We aim to ensure that the students are supported and feel in control of the process they are engaged in.
Q: How is the SRRO involved in sexual violence prevention at SLC?
Anya and Katie: The SRRO is involved in sexual violence and harassment on campus in a variety of ways. We provide support to students who disclose by providing support and service navigation. In addition, we can also support those who have received a disclosure or who are helping a survivor. The SRRO also promotes educational campaigns for the college community and training for students. Reach out to us to learn about student trainings we have to offer on sexual violence prevention.
Q: In what ways does the SRRO support employees at SLC?
Anya: We are here support the college community when it comes to navigating college policies, processes, and departments. We can share resources on things like how to support students who disclose sexual violence, when to make a report to the Behavioural Intervention Team, and more. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
Katie: The Student Rights & Responsibilities Office can help faculty navigate difficult student situations. For example, if you discover negative behaviour online or you observe inappropriate behaviour, you can reach out to our office directly or complete the Student Code of Conduct form. We also have a handout about online conduct that you can post on your Blackboard page and/or send directly to students.
