SLC is proud of having had two projects included in the CICan on the Hill student showcase on Parliament Hill in Ottawa last night, Wednesday, November 30. The event is an opportunity to engage with parliamentarians and senior federal officials to share perspectives on how colleges and institutes address skills and labour shortages, improve innovation and productivity, and support the transition to a net zero economy.
Last night’s event included an opening reception with Parliamentarians with a Student and Business Innovation Showcase, where innovative student-led initiatives were featured. Ariane Morin, a second-year welding and Fabrication student from the Cornwall Campus, described the skills and knowledge required of a welder to ensure that welds meet the high standards set by both the Canadian Red Seal Accreditation and Canadian Industry Welding Standards. Ariane had two portable Augmented Realty Arc Welders at the showcase, where guests had the opportunity to try their hand at welding in a safe and realistic but virtual reality environment. Showcase attendees received immediate feedback from the application along with guidance from Ariane on how to perfect their skills. Ariane was accompanied by Stephen Finnagan, SLC’s Associate Dean, Tri-campus School of Trades.
SLC’s Sustainability Manager Jadon Hook, a recent SLC graduate, was accompanied by Steve Janssens who is the Manager, Craig Centre for Innovation at SLC to present the Enactus project “Chill Zone” which is a one-stop guide to increasing mental health and fostering self-care within youth. Created first as an event for the St. Lawrence College community, The Chill Zone is a safe space for students to destress, relax, and participate in self-care activities including RMT Massages, Yoga, DIY activities, and easy access to counsellor services.
SLC students and employees interested in learning more about The Chill Zone can register to join the next event in the Innovation Hub in Kingston this evening (Thursday, December 1). Activities will include holiday-themed crafts, virtual reality guided meditation, drop-in huddle sessions led by Spiritual Care Facilitator Kathy Doering from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m., and visits from St. John Ambulance therapy dogs between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
