St. Lawrence College (SLC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Carmen Law (she/her) to the new senior role of Director, Belonging, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Carmen will lead the development and implementation of the College’s Belonging, Diversity & Inclusion plan, continuing the critical work of the SLC Belonging and EDI Task Force and furthering the seven strategic recommendations from its final report. Carmen will begin her new role on May 2, 2022.
Carmen’s diverse experience has led her across the country and abroad, with positions at the University of British Columbia, Queen’s University, the Bader International Study Centre, and St. Thomas University. Throughout her career Carmen has woven equity, diversity, and inclusion into all facets of her work, including workshops, coaching, intentional conversations, and staff training. Carmen is joining SLC from St. Thomas University in Fredericton, where she was Acting Director, Student Services and Residence Life and Assistant Director, Residence Life.
“Carmen will help us continue to create a diverse and inclusive college community. I know we’re all excited to have her on board, as she provides guidance in promoting a positive culture that values diversity and fosters equity, fairness, respect, cross-cultural understanding, and inclusion,” said Glenn Vollebregt, SLC President and CEO.
Carmen is a first generation Chinese Canadian who identifies as a queer woman. Respecting the traditional lands of the Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples, she is relocating from traditional territory of the Wolastoqiyik, Wəlastəkewiyik/Maliseet, whose ancestors are the Mi’Kmaq/Mi’kmaw and Passamaquoddy/Peskotomuhkati Tribes/Nations (Fredericton, New Brunswick). Carmen recognizes her privilege to travel and relocate within the constructed borders of the nation with limited barriers that may be experienced by various communities.
Her leadership approach has foundations in Servant Leadership and Strengths Based Leadership. Carmen’s human-centric approach prioritizes the needs of individuals and creative safe welcoming spaces for teams and communities. She is an experiential learner who learns from interactions and lived experiences. Her formal education includes a BA from the University of Western Ontario and a Professional Master of Education from Queen’s University.
Carmen is a community youth basketball coach and co-founder of a non-profit organization called Lead Thru Sport. She was recently recognized by the Toronto Raptors as 2022 Community Champ. She enjoys runs, bike rides, cooking, and spending quality time with her partner, friends, and family.
