Story submitted by Ivy Zhang, Global Learning Coordinator

Students from the Nagoya University of Foreign Studies in Japan are spending three weeks at St. Lawrence College’s Kingston campus this August as they complete the SLC Summer School English program. While SLC has a foreign exchange agreement with Nagoya University and sent and received students for semester exchanges prior to the pandemic, this is the first time Nagoya students have come to Kingston for the SLC Summer School English program.

The English as a Second Language program offers international students a chance to experience Canadian culture and improve their English proficiency through classes, guest speakers, experiential learning opportunities, and a conversation club. The Nagoya students will hear from guest speakers and recently visited the the Waasaabiidaasamose Indigenous Centre and the Indigenous Garden to learn about Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being and history from Knowledge Keeper Helena Neveu. Experiential learning opportunities include field trips to Ottawa and Niagara Falls as well as local attractions Bellevue House, Fort Henry, and the Museum of Health Care in Kingston.
