On March 27, the Bachelor of Behavioural Psychology (BPSYC) program offered a successful and engaging workshop to help SLC students manage and prevent burnout. Students, Don’t Get Burnt Out! aimed to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and provide students with practical tools and strategies to cope with the pressures of academic life.

Two guest speakers, Mary Ann Lyons and Erin Boyce, led the workshop. Mary Ann Lyons opened with an insightful introduction to wellness, offering a perspective rooted in Indigenous understandings of health and balance. Erin Boyce facilitated the main portion of the workshop, incorporating interactive exercises, guided meditation, psychoeducation, worksheets, and group discussions. Throughout the session, students explored the symptoms of burnout and shared actionable tips for prevention. The event fostered a supportive environment where participants could connect, share experiences, and develop strategies for maintaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle amid academic demands.

The event also featured a selection of meaningful giveaways, including a raffle for a BPSYC hoodie, mental health-themed stickers and fidget toys. These items served as enjoyable tokens and gentle reminders for students to prioritize their well-being. To keep participants energized, a spread of refreshments was provided, including pizza, healthy snacks, fresh fruit, and complimentary Gatorade water bottles.

This impactful initiative was made possible thanks to funding from the #YouthHealthGrant provided by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). The grant was awarded in response to a proposal submitted by two first-year students from the Honours Bachelor of Behavioural Psychology program, Miriam Read-Vasyutyak and Miguel Da Costa Aguiar, under the leadership of the program Coordinator, Marie-Line Jobin, and with the support of the program assistants, Emily Feuerstake and Allison Finn. Their initiative and dedication were instrumental in bringing this important workshop to life.

Overall, Students, Don’t Get Burnt Out! was a meaningful and impactful event that promoted student well-being. With over forty attendees and overwhelmingly positive feedback, many students expressed gratitude for the relevant information, practical advice, and warm, welcoming atmosphere created by the team behind the workshop.
