The SLC flags will be lowered across our three campuses this week to mark the horrific tragedy of 215 children found buried at the site of a former residential school in Kamloops BC, and to show support for grieving Indigenous communities, including those on whose traditional lands St. Lawrence College is situated on.
This discovery is another heart-breaking example of repeated attempts to eliminate Indigenous culture and is why we must continue to help shape a positive future for Indigenous learners and communities. Please note the following supports available as this is upsetting news that will impact many.
- A National Indian Residential School Crisis Line has been set up to provide support for former students and those affected. Access emotional and crisis referral services by calling the 24-hour national crisis line: 1-866 925-4419.
- A reminder for any SLC students requiring support, that available services and resources can be found here.
- College employees are reminded that they have access to counselling and mental health support through the Employee and Family Assistance Plan.
As SLC embarks on observing Indigenous History Month in June, we will continue working towards supporting the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action for our College, and will continue to support one another, honour each other in our diversity, and do so together, as a united community.
