St. Lawrence College (SLC) is thrilled to announce the grand opening of its new Specialty Nursing Lab on the Brockville campus, a state-of-the-art facility that will establish the campus as a premier health sciences study hub for all Eastern Ontario.
Funded by a generous $310,000 donation—including $200,000 from an anonymous donor, $100,000 from the Tom and Gail Kaneb Family Foundation, and $10,000 from the Don and Shirley Green Family Charitable Foundation—the Specialty Nursing Lab is poised to transform the future of healthcare education in the region.
These donations are part of SLC’s upgrading of healthcare learning spaces in Kingston, Brockville, and Cornwall, announced last spring 2023. The upgrades included the new Tom and Gail Kaneb Family Foundation Paramedic Simulation Lab in Cornwall, and the William James Henderson Foundation Specialty Nursing Lab in Kingston, which just opened in early December.
The new lab provides advanced research and learning environment designed to support specialized nursing curriculums, including neonatal intensive care (NICU), perianaesthesia care (PACU), operating room (OR), and emergency room (ER) training.
“The Specialty Nursing Lab represents a significant investment in the future of healthcare education and regional health services. It will not only enhance the learning experience for students but also address the growing demand for highly skilled healthcare professionals in specialty fields,” said Laralea Stalkie, Dean of Health & Wellness & Community Services at SLC.
“Our donors across all three campus communities have demonstrated remarkable generosity, exemplifying their belief in the power of education to transform lives. This new Specialty Nursing Lab is a testament to their commitment and our shared dedication to serving our communities. With this state-of-the-art facility, St. Lawrence College reaffirms its pledge to advancing health sciences training, equipping students with the skills and knowledge to meet the critical healthcare needs of Eastern Ontario and beyond,” said Glenn Vollebregt, President and CEO, St. Lawrence College.
“We are laser focused on increasing the capacity to educate health care professionals. We are all aware the shortage of health care professionals is negatively impacting all of us. The only way out is to increase educational capacity. Private sector donations are a critical part of this effort,” said Tom and Gail Kaneb of the Tom and Gail Kaneb Family Foundation.
Debbie Green O'Brien of the Don and Shirley Green Family Charitable Foundation shared, “I know our mom would be so happy to have our family foundation support the Specialty Nursing Lab. She was always looking at ways to provide state of the art care for the Brockville Community and to foster education. This lab fits both those requirements perfectly.”
The grand opening celebration will take place on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, featuring guided tours of the lab and demonstrations of its cutting-edge equipment and technology.
