Indigenous Artist Bio
Kyra Culp is a 24 y/o artist born in Belleville Ontario, currently residing in Brockville. Kyra has been interested in the arts since early childhood and has been drawing and sketching ever since, taking inspiration from childhood cartoons and anime. Her work is inspired by her real-life experiences and feelings, she uses a more graphic artstyle to express herself in colourful ways. Her work is characterized by stylistic anatomy, Bright colours and sometimes incorporated with dark twists. Kyra has received academic art awards from both Queen Elizabeth Public school and Centennial Secondary, her works have been displayed in the Glover gallery at Centennial secondary and the John M Parrott gallery in Belleville ON. Kyra is currently attending the Fine Arts course at St Lawrence College in Brockville On and plans to move back to Belleville after graduation.
Statement
From a very young age I have been inspired to create art. My artwork is often inspired by my experiences in life as a woman and the things I have gone through. I have never followed a set style or committed to a medium as I love to explore new things and see what clicks and what doesn’t, though the main mediums I usually use are Graphite, Acrylic on canvas and digital mediums.
When creating art I like to make things that make me feel joy, or things that evoke emotions whether it be my personal feelings or others. For a lot of my commission work I do use digital media ( Huion drawing tablet + Clip studio paint ) but for schoolwork/ gallery work I tend to lean towards using acrylic paints on canvas or pencil and drawing paper because those are the most satisfying to use for me and what i am most comfortable with.
In my work I am trying to reflect some of my personal experiences with mental illness as well as others who experience the same things. Feelings such as emptiness, dissociation, anxiety and more are what I am exploring when creating these pieces. I hope that they will provoke thinking and conversation about these topics.
