Indigenous Veterans Day was first observed on November 8, 1994, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and has since been observed across Canada. This day recognizes Indigenous contributions in times of peace and war, marked by bravery and an unwavering commitment to their homeland. Despite significant economic and social barriers, First Nations, Métis, and Inuit individuals volunteered in large numbers to serve major conflicts, from the War of 1812 to World War II, and beyond.     

Tiffany Sanford, a driven and passionate Tourism student recently distinguished herself in the prestigious Air Canada Future Tourism Leaders Contest, in collaboration with the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC). This accomplishment highlights the dedication of our students and faculty.  This competition is no ordinary recognition; it seeks out Canadian students who have made significant contributions to the country’s professional tourism sector. Winners receive complimentary registration to TIAC’s highly regarded Tourism Congress, set to take place on December 4th and 5th, along with two nights of hotel accommodation and round-trip airfare provided by Air Canada. This is a remarkable opportunity to engage with top industry leaders and gain valuable insights into the evolving landscape of tourism. 

To inspire young women and men to explore non-traditional career paths, the School of Skilled Trades recently hosted the Girls Exploring Trades Day alongside the Dual Credit Connection Day on Kingston campus and the professional development day for guidance counsellors from Upper Canada District School Board on the Brockville campus. These days offer insight and possibilities, both to students and to those who guide students into the field of skilled trades.

The annual SLC United Way Campaign is in full swing. The Campaign committee has been hard at work organizing events and opportunities to get involved for the whole SLC community. The United Way supports hundreds of organizations in Kingston, Brockville, Cornwall and surrounding areas, and last year, over 90,000 individuals across our shared communities. Your support makes a difference in our communities!   

Our class had an amazing field trip last week, as we learned about Forest Therapy as a tool we can harness in our work as Recreation Therapists with future clients. Students were asked to reflect on how this experience can be provided for clients living with various mobility, hearing, and vision impairments. For many students this was their first time experiencing Forest Therapy and a time where connection with nature and the gifts it provides in our journeys as students, emerging recreation therapists and faculty alike can always return to.
