Over the past several months, an Indigenous Community of Practice (ICoP) was formed to support indigenization and decolonization of SLC curriculum. A small but committed group of faculty began this journey, together with School of Contemporary Teaching and Learning Education Developer, Shannon Hall and Knowledge Keeper at SLC, Helena Neveu.

Red Dress Day, or the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People, is observed on May 5th. The day honours the thousands of Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people who have been subject to disproportionate violence in Canada and brings awareness to this ongoing human rights crisis. 

The month of May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada. Declaration was officially signed in May 2002, but it has been celebrated since the 1990s. It is time to reflect, learn and share the rich and diverse history of contributions that Asian-Canadians have woven into society. You are welcome to learn more about significant events in history of Canadians of Asian Heritage.   

SLC students in Mary Ann Lyons’s course in Indigenous Storytelling (GENE192) had a unique, first-hand perspective lesson in Inuk culture and traditions when their classmate, Laura Nowdluk, led a class.

Elizabeth Dimitrov, a student in SLC's Digital Marketing Communications (DMC) graduate certificate program, details the connections that form between students and community partners, using their participation in an Ontario Women Anglers workshop as an example.
